If your website disappeared tomorrow, how far back could you go?

Most small business owners assume their hosting provider is handling backups automatically. Some hosts do. Others include backups only on certain plans, or keep just a day or two of history. A few rely on you to set it up yourself.

If you have never checked, now is a good time — before something goes wrong.

This guide explains what Timeline Backups mean from a hosting perspective, what Eazyhosting backs up and how often, and how to trigger a restore from your hosting panel without needing a developer.

What do Timeline Backups actually cover?

When people talk about backing up business data, they often mean payroll files, accounting records, or documents saved to a laptop. That is important — but it is a different thing from backing up your website.

Your website lives on a hosting server, and it has two parts:

Your website files — the pages, images, theme, plugins, and code that your visitors see. These are stored in a folder on your hosting account (typically called public_html).

Your database — the content stored behind those pages. For a WordPress site, this is where your posts, pages, settings, customer records, and form submissions are saved.

Both need to be backed up. Restoring just the files without the database would give you a site with no content. Restoring just the database without the files would give you content with no website to display it.

A proper website backup captures both, at a specific point in time.

Why website backups matter for small businesses

The situations that tend to catch small business owners off-guard are rarely dramatic. More often they are:

  • A plugin update that breaks the site
  • A theme change that removes something important
  • A contact form that stops working after an accidental settings change
  • A malware injection that corrupts pages
  • An accidental post or page deletion

In these situations, the question is not whether you have a backup. It is how recent that backup is, and whether you can restore it without needing to call a developer.

If your hosting plan includes daily backups and a straightforward restore path, most of these problems are recoverable within minutes. If it does not, you may be starting from scratch.

For WordPress sites in particular, a good backup is the single most reliable safety net you have. If you have ever had a site go blank after an update, you will know how quickly that becomes a business problem. A recent backup turns a crisis into a ten-minute job. What Eazyhosting backs up

Eazyhosting runs daily automated backups on all hosting accounts. Each backup captures:

  • All website files in your hosting account
  • All MySQL databases attached to your account
  • Email accounts and settings
  • Your hosting configuration

Backups run overnight and are stored separately from your live hosting — so a problem with your site does not affect the backup itself.

Eazyhosting keeps daily backups for the last 30 days. That means if something goes wrong today, you can typically restore from yesterday, or from last week, or from earlier in the month.

You do not need to configure this or remember to run it. It happens automatically as part of your hosting plan.

If you are on a managed WordPress hosting plan, backup management is handled as part of the service. See what managed WordPress hosting with Eazyhosting includes.

If you are running on a VPS, our managed VPS with backups included guide explains what backup provision to expect from your provider.

How to check what your current host backs up

If you are not with Eazyhosting, or you are not sure what your current plan covers, here is what to look for.

Check your hosting control panel. Log in and look for Timeline Backups or the backup restore area. If you can see a list of available restore points, your host is taking backups. Note how many days back the list goes.

Read your plan description. Look for wording like "daily backups," "30-day retention," or "automatic backup included." If backups are only mentioned as a paid add-on, they are not included by default.

Ask your host directly. Ask: what gets backed up, how often, how far back, and how do I restore? If the answer is vague or technical, that is worth knowing before you need it.

What to watch for:

  • Hosts that back up files but not databases — a partial backup that cannot be used for a full restore
  • Short retention periods of just 24–48 hours — useful only for very recent problems
  • Backups stored on the same server as your live site — a server failure could take both down at once

How to restore a website backup from your hosting panel

If you need to roll your site back to an earlier version, here is the general process using Timeline Backups:

Step 1: Log in to your Eazyhosting Control Panel.

Step 2: Open Timeline Backups from the main menu. You will see a list of recent backup points.

Step 3: Choose the date you want to restore from. Pick a date before the problem occurred.

Step 4: Select what to restore. You can restore your full account, just the website files, or just the database. If you are not sure, a full restore is the safest option.

Step 5: Confirm the restore. The panel will show progress. For most small business sites, this takes a few minutes.

Step 6: Check your website once the restore is complete. If the problem is resolved, you are done. If not, contact support — there may be a different restore point that works better.

A couple of things to bear in mind before you start: restoring overwrites your current site, so if you have added anything since the problem started, it will be lost. If you are unsure which date to restore from, test on the most recent backup first.

What a good hosting plan covers

Backups should not be something you have to think about or purchase separately. They should be part of the plan.

When comparing hosting providers, it is worth asking not just about price and storage, but about the full setup — backups, email, support, and what happens when something goes wrong. See what to look for in UK web hosting for small businesses.

What to do now

If you are already with Eazyhosting, your backups are running. If you want to check or run a test restore, log in to the Eazyhosting Control Panel and open Timeline Backups.

If you are with another provider and you are not sure what is covered, take ten minutes to find out. The question to ask is simple: if my website broke tonight, what could I restore and how far back?

If you cannot get a clear answer, that is worth knowing.
